Fusion’s controls and maintenance philosophies benefit from its collaborative design approach. In-house controls engineers and maintenance technicians work closely with one another, as well as with Fusion’s HVAC and Building Services engineers, to design controls strategies that facilitate maintenance and efficient operation. Above all, the controls are designed to provide robust operation with in-built early warning systems for potential faults. The end result is reliability, energy efficiency and reduced running costs.   

Smart controls continuously fine-tune operation

Smart controls continuously fine-tune system operation, automatically adjusting to operational and environmental changes, and compensating for system degradation over time. In other words, ongoing performance optimisation is automated, ensuring the most efficient operation and minimum running costs throughout the HVAC system life-cycle.

Automated fault detection and diagnostics minimise maintenance costs

Fusion controls collect operational data, such as temperature, humidity, refrigerant pressure, damper operation and compressor HP/LP trips, to alert client operators, as well as Fusion HVAC maintenance technicians, when faults appear likely to occur or if alarms have been sounded. Automatic data diagnostics determines the potential causes and severity of such faults. This minimises service costs by allowing technicians to assess whether non-urgent site visits can be postponed to a scheduled maintenance visit or whether urgent attention is required before the fault becomes costly to repair, and by advising technicians which spare parts to bring along. 

Controls provide robust operation with redundancy

Designs include redundancy of sensors and controllers to reduce the risk of system shutdown in the event of component failure. This minimises both system downtime and maintenance costs.

Dynamic optimum start

Dynamic optimum start sequences “learn” how the building and system respond to changing parameters, such as indoor air temperature, seasonal variations and outdoor light levels, to provide the most efficient morning start-up functions year round, year after year.

Automated Checks

Automated daily start-up sequences check sensor calibration, operation of VAV, return air and economiser dampers, and adjust the system to compensate for any faults detected. Critical alerts are emailed to Fusion technicians, who are able to dial in to remotely monitor operation and recommend remedial action.

VAV for reduced fan energy

Smart controls have been specifically developed for VAV with DX systems, including VRV. This combination delivers outstanding energy efficiency, especially under part load conditions where fan energy savings can be achieved, translating into reduced running costs for the client.

Low humidity under part load

Fusion has controls strategies designed to reduce humidity levels both under full and part load conditions, thereby largely eliminating the sensation of “stuffiness” that so plagues most HVAC systems in autumn and spring.  Reduced humidity levels also allow higher cooling set point temperatures to be used–saving energy–without causing discomfort. This is especially beneficial in environments where both low and high activity levels occur–such as in retail where shoppers stroll whilst staff pack–since reduced humidity levels provide more effective cooling through evaporation from the skin.

Adjustable discharge direction

Many of Fusion’s designs include motorised diffusers with adjustable discharge direction. Fusion’s controls modulate the angle at which supply air is discharged so as to spread cool supply air largely horizontally, without causing draughts, whereas warm supply air is directed downwards to prevent its buoyancy from wastefully stratifying the heat to a high level.

Integrated solutions

Fusion controls can be interfaced with a variety of controls or building management systems (Emerson ,Siemens, Schneider) and additional third party devices such as power meters, light sensors and water meters. This flexibility frees clients to use controls hardware of their choosing.

Applications - Displacement

Displacement systems enhance occupancy micro climate indoor air quality and concentrate cooling in this low lying zone, rather than wasting energy on cooling the entire volume.  Displacement systems are characterised by a healthy indoor environment and low running costs, but their sophisticated operation requirements demand specialized controls logic as well as modified heat pumps. We have developed bespoke controls specifically for these applications–both in the industrial and commercial sectors–examples of which include Millennium Plastics and Hoyts Cinemas. 

Applications - Modular

Fusion’s modular systems have been designed as a standard product, rather than a custom design for each site.  This means that systems are factory manufactured, with controls factory fitted and tested within a controlled environment and with sound quality control.This approach increases reliability and the quality of the product and minimises the risk of onsite errors, as the product is “ready to go” from the factory.  It also supports easy and rapid installation – usually in one day! – and reduced site commissioning with a higher quality result.
